Understanding Public IP Addressing, ASNs & BGP Routing
Every packet transmitted across the global internet relies on Internet Protocol (IP) routing headers, Autonomous System Numbers (ASN), and Border Gateway Protocol (BGP). Learn the architecture powering modern internet connectivity.
IPv4 vs. IPv6 Architecture & Dual-Stack Connectivity
With IPv4 exhaustion at all five Regional Internet Registries (RIRs), dual-stack networking is critical for zero-loss traffic routing.
| Feature | IPv4 (RFC 791) | IPv6 (RFC 8200) | Operational Impact |
|---|---|---|---|
| Address Length | 32 bits (4 bytes) | 128 bits (16 bytes) | Expands address space from 4.3 billion to 340 undecillion addresses |
| Address Notation | Dotted-decimal (192.0.2.1) | Hexadecimal (2001:db8::1) | Allows zero-compression (::) and subnet grouping |
| NAT Requirement | Mandatory (Carrier-Grade NAT / CGNAT) | Eliminated (End-to-End Direct) | Restores true peer-to-peer connectivity without port translation bottlenecks |
| Header Size | Variable (20–60 bytes) | Fixed (40 bytes) | Streamlines hardware router forwarding processing speed |
| Configuration | DHCP or Manual static | SLAAC (Stateless Address Autoconfig) | Zero-touch interface address configuration using neighbor discovery |
Autonomous System Numbers (ASN)
An Autonomous System (AS) is a collection of connected Internet Protocol routing prefixes under the control of one or more network operators on behalf of a single administrative entity or domain.
- Assigned by Regional Internet Registries (ARIN, RIPE, APNIC, LACNIC, AFRINIC).
- Exchanges routing reachability with peers using Border Gateway Protocol (BGP-4).
- Distinguishes datacenter hosting providers (Hetzner, OVH, AWS) from residential ISPs (Comcast, AT&T, Vodafone).
Reverse DNS (PTR) & FCrDNS
While forward DNS converts hostnames to IP addresses, Reverse DNS (rDNS) resolves IP addresses back to canonical domain names via special in-addr.arpa zones.
- Email Deliverability: Gmail, Yahoo, and Outlook reject mail from IPs without valid matching PTR records.
- Forward-Confirmed rDNS (FCrDNS): Verifies that the PTR host resolves back to the connecting IP, proving genuine authorization.
- Logging & Network Auditing: Simplifies intrusion detection and sysadmin traceroute analysis.

100.64.0.0/10 range (RFC 6598) to customers. Hundreds of subscribers share a single public IPv4 address through large-scale Network Address Translation. Under CGNAT, inbound port forwarding (self-hosting, Minecraft servers, home VPNs) is impossible without IPv6, reverse tunnels (Cloudflare Tunnels, Tailscale), or a dedicated static public IPv4 lease.
